VAGRANT HOSTEL

How strange and wonderful it is

That never ceasing, every night,

The quiet fountain keeps flowing forth

Guarded by the cool shade of the maple tree.

And again and again, like scent, the moonlight

Rests upon the house’s gables,

And through the chilly, dark air flies

The wispy flock of passing clouds!

That everything is, that everything lasts,

While we, we merely stay for a night

And then walk on, across the land,

None paying us another thought.

And then, perhaps after many a year,

A fountain comes to us in a dream,

And gate, and gable, the way it was

And still is and for long shall be.

It shines out at us like a sense of home,

And yet it was just a short night’s rest,

A stranger’s roof for a passing stranger

Who’s forgotten the inn’s name, even its city.

How strange and wonderful it is

That never ceasing, every night,

The quiet fountain keeps flowing forth

Guarded by the cool shade of the maple tree!
